This is a great question I get asked quite a bit. For most people I recommend giving them a good shampoo once or twice a week. It’s actually pretty quick and easy and I’ll outline my method below. All you need is clean water, a mild shampoo or liquid hand soap, and a towel.
There’s a few reasons why we should keep our brushes clean. First off, your brushes will hold and grow bacteria if not washed. This is a culprit for breakouts. So the cleaner they are, the cleaner your skin. Second, they’ll last a lot longer if well cared for. And third, they’ll perform better when clean and fluffy.
My Method
All you need is a clean towel, warm water, and some mild liquid soap or shampoo.
Lay out your towel. Fill your bathroom skin half full with lukewarm water.
Take a brush, or two at a time, and wet the bristles in the water, working them through your fingers. Be mindful not to fully submerge the brush, as we want to keep the handle and ferrule (the part that holds the bristles) from getting wet.
Put a dollop of soap into the palm of one of your hands. Swirl the wet bristles into the soap in a circular motion until all the makeup comes out.
Rinse in the sink water. Use your fingers to squeeze out all the excess water. Gently press both sides into your towel.
Lay flat to dry on the towel. Let sit overnight. (Avoid standing them up in a jar to dry – this will force any leftover moisture down into the ferrule where the glue is, and will damage the brush)
And there you have it. Easy peasy. This lessens the chance of a breakout, will ensure a long happy life for your brushes, and keep them in tip-top shape.
